Wire burn tools are used to add detail to woodturnings by creating a crisp black line. While holding a handle in each hand, put tension on the wire and with moderate pressure hold the wire against the rotating turning until enough friction is generated to cause the wire to burn the wood. Usually a small amount of smoke is produced. Buff with steel wool and apply finish.
Do not touch the wire when it is hot.
Wire burn lines can be used to define beads and other details, or used to add decoration to straight cylindrical sections of turnings. When wire burning, first scribe a line to be burned by using a skew or diamond point tool to make a very small vee groove. This will keep the wire from 'skating' across the surface.
The tools are made from high quality musical instrument wire and each tool should be good for several dozen applications before needing to be replaced.
Not recommended for use on abrasive materials.
