Tagua Nuts

Latin Name: Phytelephas macrocarpa

Origin: South America

Colour: Outside of the nut is dark brown. Inside is usually ivory white but can be ivory amber.

Other Info: Also known as Vegetable Ivory. Tagua nuts are the seeds from the Ivory Palm tree. The nuts are not truly round and have an approximate diameter of 25mm - 51mm (1" - 2"). They are solid, except for a small hollow in the centre. Used for jewellery, inlay, carving and turning. To turn a nut cut or sand a flat surface on one end. Then glue to a piece of wood and fix to the lathe using a chuck.
